The vernacular language and literature of any society include many of its cultural components and, as a result, are the most appropriate tools for recognizing the cultural identity of the people of that society. In the meantime, vernacular lexicography, which has become very popular in the contemporary period, plays an effective role in recognizing this identity. One of the prominent works in the field of lexicography of this type of language is the Persian Vernacular Dictionary, by Abolhasan Najafi, which has examined the colloquial vocabulary units of Tehran since the beginning of the fourteenth century. This research aimed to evaluate the success of this book in observing the principles of lexicography based on the library method. After studying these principles and examining the elements of lexicography, the result was that the aforementioned work is the best dictionary in the field of vernacular language, because unlike previous similar works, it has a comprehensive, systematic, and up-to-date lexicography structure, and it also avoids oral sources and benefits from a coherent written corpus. Although there are also some drawbacks in the formal areas of dictionary writing.
