Abstract: The aim of the present article was to examine five authentic English and Persian monolingual learner's dictionary, namely Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE), Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD), Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (CALD), Oxford Collocations Dictionary (OCD), and Advanced Learner's Persian Dictionary (Assi, 2019) from the perspective of dictionary criticism basics proposed by Malkiel (1993) and by adopting a corpus-based approach, in terms of information presentation criterion (Malkiel's third criterion). For this purpose, entries along with their sub-entries from the above-mentioned dictionaries were presented as examples and then based on the data available in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) they were criticized. Then, while enumerating defects in eight categories, the reason for their occurrence was pointed out. Finally, the role of corpus linguistics and the way to benefit from it in promoting English and Persian monolingual learner's dictionaries and subsequently reducing dictionary-making errors were put forward.
