In his analysis of verb stress in Persian within the framework of prosodic phonology of Selkirk (1980, 1981, 1984, and 1986) and Nespor and Vogel (1982 and 1986) Kahnemuyipour (2003) has considered many verb forms to constitute phonological phrases. In his analysis, stress is assigned to the first phonological word in such phrases and thus, not only ‘xaride’ in ‘xaride baʃam’ and ‘neɡɑh’ in ‘neɡɑh card’, but also the inflectional verbal prefixes including /mi-/, /be-/, and /na-/ are considered to constitute phonological words and take stress. Also, in Kahnemuyipour’s analysis, verbal agreement suffixes and clitics are considered to form prosodic words to observe the Strict Layer Hypothesis despite the fact that they are not stressed. On the other hand, Rahmani (2019) objects to defining prosodic words solely based on accent location. To him, verbal inflectional affixes as well as clitics are prosodically deficient elements and do not show the properties of phonological words. Rahmani argues that stress assignment rules in Persian are sensitive to morpho-syntactic structure and that stress is assigned to morphological words rather than phonological words. In the present paper in line with Rahmani (2019) and emphasizing the concept of minimal word, we show that the inflectional verbal affixes and clitics are not phonological words in this language. At the same time, using more recent approaches in prosodic phonology, in line with Kahnemuyipour (2003) we will show that verb stress in Persian shows the properties of phonological phrases without needing to resort to considering the morphemes in question as phonological words.
