The effects of such radical changes are evident in the constant shifting of technology, material culture, ecosystems and even moral attitudes. One particularly striking outcome of this situation is the number of languages which will simply cease to be spoken. This phenomenon- language death - and the factors and conditions which give rise to it, are briefly discussed in the first section of the present article, followed by a review of literature on the subject. <br />Our country, Iran, with a long history and tradition, enjoys various ethnic groups, each of which has its own native language. In recent years, the above-mentioned condition put these languages in the danger of extinction. The major part of this article reports the findings of several field studies on the use and social status of local languages in Iran and the speakers’ attitudes toward their mother tongue. The final section of the article includes some suggestions to improve the existing situation in order to maintain endangered languages of Iran. عصر حاضر، بدون شک، عصر تغییرات وسیع، تحولات سریع و پویایی مفرط است. آثار چنین تحولات ناگهانی در تغییرات پیوستة فن‌آورانه، فرهنگ مادی، اکوسیستم­ها و حتی ارزش‌های اخلاقی حاکم بر جامعة ما قابل مشاهده است. یکی از پیامدهای بارز این وضعیت، زبان­هایی هستندکه دیگر کسی با آنها تکلم نمی­کند. این پدیده ـ مرگ زبان ـ و عوامل و شرایطی که به آن دامن می­زند، به اختصار در بخش ابتدایی این مقاله مورد بحث قرار گرفته­اند و به دنبال آن پیشینة مطالعات انجام شده در این زمینه آمده است. <br />    کشور ما، ایران، از تاریخ و پیشینة طولانیِ گروه‌های قومی متنوع برخوردار است که هر کدام از آنها زبان بومی خود را دارند. در سال‌های اخیر، شرایطی که وصف آن در بالا گذشت، این زبان‌ها را در معرض خطر انقراض قرار است. بخش اصلی این مقاله به گزارش یافته­های چند مطالعة میدانی در خصوص کاربرد و جایگاه اجتماعی زبان‌های محلی ایران و نگرش‌های گویشوران نسبت به زبان مادری­شان می­پردازد. بخش پایانی مقاله نیز شامل پیشنهادهایی برای بهبود وضع موجود به منظور حفظ زبان‌های در معرض خطرِ ایران است. https://lsi-linguistics.ihcs.ac.ir/article_1608_faafda66202d234463057972460c04f5.pdf
